MHD's video for his global hit, "Afro Trap Pt. 9 (Faut les wet)," premieres today on The FADER—watch and share here. The track has over two million streams to date.

MHD is a 22-year-old French rapper, leader of the Afrotrap movement and global phenomenon.

He is set to tour North America for the first time this fall, including stops at PlayStation Theater in New York on September 14, The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on September 19 and further dates in Boston, Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Quebec City. See a full list of dates below.

"Afro Trap Pt. 9 (Faut les wet)" follows MHD's previously released hit, "
Bravo," which has over five million streams to date. MHD's music mixes African instrumentation and trap beats, creating a new genre he coined as Afrotrap. His catalogue has over 160 million streams on Spotify and 500 million views on YouTube.

Hailing from the 19th arrondissement of Paris, MHD is Mohamed Sylla, a French artist of half Guinean and half Senegalese decent. In 2015, MHD was working delivering pizzas when he began posting videos of his original freestyles on YouTube. His videos quickly went viral, attracting the attention of artists, tastemakers and professional athletes around the globe, including Drake, Stormzy, Paul Pogba of Manchester United and more.
In April 2016, he released his self-titled debut album to much critical acclaim. MHD reached #2 on the French charts and has since gone double platinum. He has played sold-out shows in Europe, Africa and the United Kingdom. His viral track, "
Afro Trap Part. 8 (Never)," soundtracked adidas' ad for the adidas x Pogba Capsule Collection. In June, MHD became the first French artist nominated for "Best International Act: Europe" at the BET Awards. Further music from MHD is set for release later this year.

GANGLY release their self-titled debut EP today, Thursday 31st August, via AMF Records. The EP release is accompanied with a video for new single 'Drowning' directed by Máni Sigfússon.

'Drowning' video here

The hybrid trio is formed of the most influential and prolific bands in Reykjavik, Icleand; Sin Fang's Sindri Már Sigfússon, Samaris' Jófríður Ákadóttir and Oyama's Úlfur Alexander Einarsson.  First appearing like an apparition in the Soundcloud cosmos with 'Fuck With Someone Else' and after revealing only 3 songs, they have been streamed over 1,200,000 times across Spotify, Youtube and Soundcloud. Their mysterious debut came in the form of an anonymously sent video featuring a metallic face emerging from a coppery sea, accompanied by a disembodied, pitch-shifted voice.

All of GANGLY's tracks contain a sense of reserve and composure: they're catchy, but unhurried, and each features sharp-eyed, meticulous production. "What I love about these slow jam pop songs we make is having a simple melody, that touches some strings," says Úlfur. "I like to think about the spaces where one line ends and the next begins. That's a very powerful space."

"Holy Grounds" and "Blow Out" invite you further into their intriguing universe with. "All the songs exist in the same made-up world," says Úlfur. "It's not exactly a narrative — each one stands alone — but there's a theme there. Heartbreak, maybe. Loneliness, and the difficulty of human relationships."

"Whole Again" is a warm and intimate song arrived from Jófríður almost finished, then Úlfur and Sindri wrote lyrics for another verse. "I interpret the song as being about sheltering a loved one who has a broken wing," Úlfur explains, "just trying to help them survive. I think it's one of the most beautiful lyrics she has written."

Jófríður originally wrote the song in Los Angeles, about a troubled relative. "I think the lyrics do most of the talking for themselves," she says. "It's a very sweet song about caring for someone."

The song was finished and produced collaboratively, across a long distance, as is often the case for the regularly touring, multi-tasking members of GANGLY. "I think that the distance helps us," says Jófríður, "the fact that we're all working on our own, then we come together to strengthen each other's work. My favourite thing about GANGLY is the total freedom we have, within the band's aesthetic."

The fourth track 'Drowning' is "dark, and bleak, but with some hope at the end of the tunnel. "Úlfur finishes. "I'm excited to take the next steps. We won't stay in this lonely chrome world forever."

1 - Holy Grounds
2 - Blow Out

#Smarterhiphop submission New > Listen > Hagan - 'Detect' > from new EP, 'Roots', out September 1

Hagan
'Roots' EP
(Push & Run)

Release Date: 1st September 2017

premiered by Dummy:

UK indie Push & Run follow up an excellent recent EP from Canadian producer Benjamin Munoz with 'Roots' — a new four-track record from London producer, 'Hagan'.

With previous releases on breakout club labels like Beat Werk and Strut Records, Hagan has spent the last few years honing his sound, which is inspired by a mix of Funky, Afrobeat, Baile Funk and more recently, Gqom. "The EP brings me back to the origins of why I started making music", he explains. "It references a sound that focuses on dark, percussive and afro-influenced drum patterns that draw on minimalist grooves."

The nifty, quick-fire drum work on opener 'FWD' open the EP at electric pace, while second track 'Detect' comes correct with booming, lo-slung bass and bubbling, Funky rhythm. Keen to zone in on the concept of returning to his 'Roots', Hagan's title-track zips in and out of experimental club territory, fusing new-skool industrial pressure with killer Afro-rhythms, with final joint 'Aburi' landing as a thumping extension of his early Funky productions.

Backed by DJs like Murlo and Champion over the years, Hagan's recent time in the studio has clearly benefitted his sound, with 'Roots' set to land as his most thoughtful and accomplished work yet.

Tracklist

1. FWD
2. Detect
3. Roots
4. Aburi
